I’m not usually someone who complains about this, because filmmaking is insanely hard to get right, especially on a low-budget, but something about the atmosphere of this movie felt slightly off to me. We want to hear what you have to say but need to verify your account. These people are all atoning for something, or so we’re told, and you would think the existential solitude and knowledge that they will likely never see Earth again would be a prime starting point for some really interesting and introspective examinations on these people, their conceptions of themselves, Life their actions and place in the universe.
I don’t know what Denis and her movie is trying to say and it’s generally hard to follow when we don’t get to know people and situations before jumping around in time. You’ll need a stiff drink. High Life Critics Consensus High Life is as visually arresting as it is challenging, confounding, and ultimately rewarding – which is to say it’s everything film fans expect from director Claire Denis.
This is an alternately disturbing, intellectually stimulating, scary, erotic, and revolting collection of moments that you’re supposed to watch, listen and react to, not necessarily process as one might a traditional linear narrative, or some kind of cinematic equation that can be unlocked like the final level of a videogame. At 73, Denis shows that you can still make a totally original, batshit crazy film, and that’s something to celebrate.

Pattinson has really impressed me with his recent indie output working with eclectic artists, especially his live wire performance in 2017’s Good Time as a hapless criminal trying to get out of an increasing mess.
They must now rely on each other to survive as they hurtle toward the oblivion of a black hole. He’s first seen living alone on the aforementioned deep space vessel, a dark and messy place plagued by technical problems, taking care of a little girl named Willow Scarlett Lindsay.
It’s the kind of film that sparks arguments on the way home, not just about what happened and what it meant, but whether it was a good movie—and if not, precisely which expectations it failed to satisfy, and whether it ever intended to satisfy them. This is going to be much more metaphorical and subtextual science fiction, so I was waiting for the eventual themes to emerge, and I just kept waiting. It’s frustrating because the movie has so much potential with its premise and setting and different narrative pieces, but ultimately it feels too lost in space when it comes to larger meaning and substance.
I knew I was in troubled territory when the movie spends a whopping 18 minutes 18! There are no laser shootouts, lightsabers, spaceship battles, or talks of imperial succession here—just long, often eerily quiet scenes of adults being adults, in a futuristic environment that turns every situation into a metaphor and every metaphor into a situation.
A film that lashes out at humankind as a species of grunting thugs entirely at the mercy of the procreative impulse. Somebody was clearly playing my imaginary game when they paired legendary French director Claire Denis with a science fiction film.
Ok, I’m sure most of you will think, “I don’t have time for your nerdy nonsense”, but it’s fun on a dull Friday night. Some may find the film to be a crashing bore, but I found it hypnotic, open to interpretation, and beautiful. It was a bad indication of what was to come. These people too often feel like vacant shells of human beings, zombies walking the corridors in habit. I was waiting for some taut tension. Even if I loved this movie, I still wouldn’t recommend it, simply because there are many things presented throughout this movie that will turn off many viewers. The next hour is almost a mad scientist drama with a bunch of expendable characters meeting unfortunate ends.
It is an elliptical film, yes, because it will answer only the questions that you did not think to ask. For example, I’ve often wondered what it would be like if David Fincher directed a romantic comedy, or if Mira Nair directed a musical. I’m not sure what I saw, but I loved it just the same. With its High violence, explicit sex, and up-close views of blood, sweat, urine, and semen, it is proudly an R-rated film, verging on NC-17—though the X-rating, which was discontinued by the MPAA almost 30 years ago, might feel more appropriate.
I loved shots of the crew standing together staring out the window or a lone space glove floating in the coat room. We get little glimpses of this but mostly the other characters are kept at an unreachable distance; they’re strangers to the audience, so when they start being dispatched one-by-one the emotional response is simply that of indifference.
Juliette Binoche’s character is performing fertility experiments and has her eyes set on a specific DNA combination. This is operating more on a metaphorical level than a hard science level, though the asides with black Life are depicted with intelligence.
So Fresh: Absolute Must See! Everything about this movie is retro, from the opaque yet fully felt performances led by Pattinson that make the audience come to the actors rather than the other way around, to Stuart Staples’ analog synthesizer-heavy soundtrack, to the closing credits song by Tindersticks featuring none other than Pattinson, whose vocals suggest what might sound like if he lost his will to live.
The characterization by Denis and her four other co-writers five people wrote this! High Life often looks gorgeous, with large swaths bathed in moody lighting and artfully styled shot compositions. How the rest of the crew met their fates makes up the body of the story. If you’ve read this far, you know whether this is your kind of movie. And it’s yet another feather in the cap of its star,who has become one of the most reliably intense yet unaffected leading men in cinema—and who, with his former costaris helping to keep a particular kind of auteur-driven, middle-budget art house film alive, at a time when 40 percent of yearly North American box office receipts come from family-targeted Disney properties.

Their growth throughout the film and development within their characters easily felt like the most impressive aspect. It feels like pieces of more meaningful ideas and conversations are left as 2019 detritus, demanding that an audience not just put the pieces together but also project their own meaning onto that puzzle. High Life feels like Annihilation in space but even lacking that movie’s attuned sense of purpose about mankind’s relationship with nature and its general indifference to us. Ignoring the showbiz maxim warning actors never to share the screen with a dog or a child, Pattinson bonds with the audience by treating every moment between Monte and Willow as a record of simple actions: a feeding, a bedtime routine, a grown man attempting to dissuade a child from crying for the sake of his own mental health, and most affectingly, an attempt to enjoy “quality time” while doing a job that can’t be put off until later specifically, repairing the exterior of the spacecraft while talking to Willow via video link.
